Who teaches at the Steve Jackson Tennis Camp?

Our teaching pros are qualified instructors who have either played Division I (NCAA) and/or United States Tennis Association (USTA) tournaments or have been instructed by me and who continue to pass on my strong belief in proper techniques, footwork, respect for the game of tennis, and good sportsmanship for juniors and advanced players. They have worked with beginners, advanced beginners, intermediate players, beginning high school tournament and USTA tournament players in helping develop their tennis game.

What will the daily schedule be?

9:00am to 9:15am - Light run

9:15am to 9:20am - Stretching

9:20am to 9:25am - Jumping rope

9:25am to 9:45am - Foot, balance, hand/eye coordination drills

9:45am to 10:45am - Basic strokes, forehand & backhand drills, serve, volley and overheads stroke drills

10:45am to 11:00am - Fresh fruit break – Please note fresh fruit varies from day to day, but the fruits usually consist of either apples, bananas, blueberries, cherries, grapes, watermelon, oranges or strawberries.

11:00am to 12:00pm - Match play for advance players. For the others, we will be reviewing and continuing to practice proper techniques on basic strokes (forehand & backhand), hand/eye coordination drills, racquet control, balance, foot drills, serve, volleys and overheads for the others student, along with games.

What if a camper signs up for a full day?

If a student signs up for a full day, they will follow the daily morning schedule and then have their lunch break from 12:00pm to 1:00pm. The afternoon program will start at 1:00pm and will be customized for each individual student(s) that attended the morning session. For example, the full day student wouldn't repeat the light running. Instead, we would focus on their groundstrokes (forehand & backhand), serve, volleys, overheads … and students that have match play experience would either play out points or matches with other students or teaching pros.

Can a student enroll on a daily basis?

YES, DAILY SESSIONS ARE AVAILABLE FOR EXPERIENCED STUDENTS ONLY NO BEGINNERS: EXPERIENCED 10 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER, MIDDLE SCHOOL, HIGH SCHOOL AND TOURNAMENT PLAYERS: $60.00 PER SESSION.

Can a student show up the day of a camp session?

Yes. However, we do not recommend this because once the day session is filled it is considered closed. If we have an available slot open, a daily session would then be available for $60 per session, and a completed application, along with complete medical forms and payment for each student is required.

What happens if it rains?

If we are given ample advance notice, the camp will be moved indoors to either the Maywood Tennis Club or The Washington Township Tennis Club. For the students that have match play experience, they would play other indoor summer tennis camps while the other students will work on there groundstrokes (forehand & backhand), serve, volleys, overheads, footwork etc. Credit will be given for another session if camp is not moved indoors due to rainouts.

What if there is a heat wave?

Last year, during the heat wave, we had the students hit for 10 minutes and we followed that by a cool down session with water related activities. When the students are ready, they then go back to hitting. In our experience, we found the kids really enjoy this break and have a lot of fun in the process. We also have a garden hose with a sprinkler nozzle that we allow students use to spray themselves to cool down. We have outdoor tents we set up daily that we use for shade from the sun and coverage from the rain and we also use them to exercise and do foot drills under. Please note that no child will be pushed to get back on the court until they are ready and have cooled down enough.

How many students are on the court at the same time?

Group size varies throughout the day. All students start the day off together with the morning run and then separate depending on what drills will be working on. A group will consist of 4 – 6 students at a time. If a student needs extra help they will be given the help with a teaching pro. As you can see, it all depends. However, all the kids have fun and learn at the same time.

Will my child be on the court with someone his or her age?

Some of my 5, 6 and 7 year old students are more advanced than some of our new or older students, but that does not deter anyone from learning at a pace that is best required for each individual. I believe, and teach, in helping each other because we are all tennis players at the camp and we can all learn and become a better player with the help of one another.

Can my child be in the same group with his or her friend?

Absolutely, yes! Please make a note of it on the application.

Do you have extra tennis rackets for students?

Yes
